A Scientific Study of Road Humps

Abstract

A Scientific Study Of Road Humps The roads are designed for a certain design speed to meet the mobility requirement. However, at some of the locations control of speed may become necessary. For that purpose, traffic calming measures have been used. This paper describes the various traffic calming measures used to reduce accidents/crashes or reduce the severity of accidents.

Speed breakers are one of the widely used traffic calming measures such as speed bump, speed hump and speed table. Various types of speed breakers should be discussed along with problems associated with them and suitable remedial measures are also suggested in this study.

Conclusion

After collecting data for almost 2000 vehicles, it was found that speed slots followed by 22-ft speed humps allowed the highest average and 85th percentile crossing speeds. Twelve-ft speed humps, speed cushions and prefabricated 14-ft speed humps recorded the lowest crossing speeds. The design of the speed hump encouraged drivers to travel centrally within their lane. Lateral positioning while traversing the speed slot and cushion varied. At speed slots a large percentage of drivers shifted to the left, in an attempt to place the vehicle’s left tires in the slot.
