Efficient Resource Allocation for on – Demand Mobile – Edge Cloud Computing

Abstract

Mobile-edge cloud computing is a new paradigm for providing cloud computing capabilities at the edge of pervasive radio access networks in close proximity to mobile users. In order to provide flexible on-demand mobile-edge cloud service, we propose in this paper a comprehensive framework consisting of a resource-efficient computing offloading mechanism for users and a Joint Communication and Computing (JCC) resource allocation mechanism for network operator.

Introduction

Efficient Resource Allocation for On-Demand Mobile-Edge Cloud Computing As smartphones gain enormous popularity, more and more new mobile applications are emerging and attracting great attention, such as face recognition, natural language processing, interactive gaming, and augmented reality.

This kind of mobile applications are typically resource-hungry, demanding intensive computing, and real-time responsive-ness. However, due to the physical size constraint, mobile devices are generally resource-constrained with limited computation resources. The tension between resource-hungry applications and resource-constrained mobile devices poses a significant challenge for future mobile platform development.

Conclusion

In order to provide flexible mobile-edge cloud service, we proposed in this paper a comprehensive framework consisting of a user-friendly resource-efficient computing offloading mechanism and a resource allocation mechanism for the network operator for joint communication and computation (JCC).

For each individual user, we first solved the resource-efficient computing offloading problem and derived the optimal communication and computing resource demanding profile that minimizes the resource occupancy and meets the delay constraint.
